Woke up at 6am to the sound of a torrential downpour and thunderstorm. Bugger that, I thought, and turned over. Even at 11 it was still tipping down at the same vast rate. I emerged at 12 to huge puddles and what felt at least a ten degree drop in temperature thanks to the rain. I was almost cold in shorts and a t-shirt.

I spent the day chilling and planning the rest of my Thailand schedule. I would stop off in a few smaller cities in central Thailand before reaching Chiang Mai in time for Songkran, a Buddhist festival which has evolved from throwing water over images of Buddha to an all-out five day water fight on the streets. I needed to stock up on weaponry before then.

Sitting on the kerb of the Khao San Road I struck up a conversation with a geezer called Paul from Liverpool, who had just got here for an indeterminate period of time to teach English to Thai kids. We went for a few beers in Gulliver's Tavern on the corner. After a while, a black guy with bleach blonde hair strolled in, and we stared at each other wide-eyed and speechless with shock. "Bloody hell!" was all I
