Coral Beach was a disappointment, being small and almost exclusively occupied by scuba diving nerds talking shop. What a load of ballasts. Our plan was to watch the sunset, but in this case cloud stopped play.

That evening I went for the shark barbeque, and very nice it was too. It was revenge for those nights as a kid in which the film 'Jaws' gave me nightmares. Rather unfair, if you think about it. Steven Spielberg should be on the barbie instead.

Perhentian Islands, Malaysia

The beautifully warm and translucent waters of the Perhentians make it a premier diving and snorkelling spot. We signed up for a full day of the latter today. Meeting our mischievous, grinning Malay skipper on Long Beach, we were introduced to our fellow snorkellers: a young couple from Huddersfield and a older French lady. Soon we were bouncing over the waves to the first of many sights around the pair of islands.
