One traveller's day-by-day account of a year-long journey through Japan, China, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, America and Canada

The place wasn't quite what I had expected. I felt as if I'd wandered onto the set of The Odd Couple as I was introduced to David, the middle-aged Chinese owner, and his long-term English boarder of similar age, Jeremy.

David was a no-nonsense, 'a spade is a spade, a shovel is a shovel, a trowel is a trowel' (you get the picture) kind of fellow, although not unkind. He informed us we could sit in on dinner for a few Ringgit extra; it would be ready within the hour and the local Chief of Police would be coming round.

And so we sat down to a spag bol that Jeremy had rustled up, accompanied with King Prawns and oysters and a whole host of other dishes, sitting opposite the surprisingly human local Chief of Police and his lovely wife and exchanging friendly conversation whilst their kids watched a DVD. One of the more surreal (yet immensely enjoyable) evenings of my travels so far!
