On my trip I predominantly used the Lonely Planet Shoestring series of guidebooks, and I can highly recommend them. Aimed squarely at the backpacker on a budget rather than the resort tourist other guidebooks cater for, they were particularly useful for finding cheap eats and hostels in the expensive countries of Australia, New Zealand, USA and Canada.
